The UN Refugee Agency.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is dedicated to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, war or disaster at home.
In 2014, UNHCR launched the I BELONG campaign that aims at ending statelessness by 2024.
UNHCR works with governments to help them to make changes to legislation and procedures, which are necessary to recognize stateless people as nationals. It provides guidance and technical assistance to governments to establish procedures to recognize stateless people and give them a legal status along with basic human rights. At a grass roots level, the agency works with NGOs , human rights groups and other UN partners to make sure that stateless people can obtain access to education, health care, employment and other basic rights.
The improvement of civil registration and vital statistics systems around the world is essential to achieve the agency’s goal to end statelessness. Registering births of refugee children means providing them with a legal identity, thus giving them social protection, social inclusion and facilitating their future opportunities.
