This final report on the Life Table Series 2010 - 2020 is the result of strong inter-agency collaboration and reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the demographic and health data landscape in the Maldives.
A life table is a demographic tool used to summarize the mortality patterns and survival probabilities of a population. It provides a detailed picture of life expectancy, the likelihood of surviving to various ages, and the distribution of deaths across different age groups. By systematically organizing this information, a life table serves as a vital resource for demographic studies, public health planning, and policy development.
This document outlines the construction of the abridged life table for Maldives, focusing specifically on the resident Maldivian population.
The life table has been extended to 110 years using the logit transformation method to extrapolate mortality trends at older ages. This method ensures a biologically plausible extrapolation of mortality trends beyond observed data, maintaining the integrity and continuity of life expectancy projections. Additionally, as the Maldivian population tends toward an aging demographic, this methodology accounts for policy and planning needs. Accurate life expectancy estimates are crucial for pension funds, healthcare planning, and social security systems, further emphasizing the importance of robust life table projections.
