Before diving into this month's stories, we want to wish all of our readers a Happy New Year from the CRVS team in ESCAP's Statistics Division. As we begin 2020, we want to take this moment and reflect upon some achievements. Overall, 2019 was a great year when many countries and development partners worked hard to improve CRVS in Asia and the Pacific. Some of our favorite stories highlighting the progress being made to strengthen and improve national systems are included below.

In 2017, development partners, international organizations, government agencies, and NGOs working to design and support ID systems came together to develop shared principles for maximizing the benefits of identification for development while mitigating the risks. These Principles on Identification for Sustainable Development have now been endorsed by 25 organizations.

Following up on our story from January, this is a reminder that ESCAP is currently inviting abstracts for the 2020 Asia-Pacific Statistics Week to be held from 15-19 June 2020, in Bangkok, Thailand. The Asia-Pacific Statistics Week will provide a forum for experts and managers involved in official statistics and national statistical systems in the Asia-Pacific region.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of well-functioning CRVS systems which, as the SCORE for Health Data Technical Package assessment has shown, are still not producing data of sufficient quality to guide public health decision-making in many parts of the world.

Between 16 – 19 November, ESCAP will be hosting the Second Ministerial Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Asia and the Pacific. The Conference will be conducted virtually and live proceedings can be followed via the ESCAP YouTube platform.
